Candidates are not required to submit a full portfolio of work or their class work, as teachers are not able to supervise the completion of work where candidates have taken their devices home. The mini portfolio must have been produced and collated in class under teacher supervision.

Candidates are to produce a mini portfolio of evidence that reflects the development of their own design for a Level 6 digital technologies outcome, in accordance with the New Zealand Curriculum. Class exercises or group work are not accepted. 

In 2025 the candidate’s design should be created for a suitable digital technologies outcome − for example, a website, a mobile app, a game, a software application, an animation, or a robotics project. Designs for a simple digital outcome, such as a standalone logo or poster, are not suitable to submit as evidence at NZC Level 6. 

The mini portfolio may include, for example, a combination of research notes, drawings, sketches, images, digital illustrations, evaluative annotations or statements, diagrams, wireframes, schematics, flow or block diagrams. 

The collation of work should cover the design stage / phase only, for a digital technologies outcome. The mini portfolio should contain evidence of: 

• the need or opportunity being met

• the potential users and their requirements

• the design ideas generated

• the completed final design created 

• an explanation of how the candidate used or applied manaakitanga or kaitiakitanga in their design or during the design stage / phase

• the use of feedback to improve their design

• how the design decisions made improved the quality of their completed design for a proposed digital technologies outcome

• how the decisions made during the design stage / phase contributed to the design’s fitness for purpose. 

Candidates will be required to provide evidence that they created a design for a digital technologies outcome. They must include in their mini portfolio a minimum of three different images (JPG or PNG), including:

• one image showing their completed final design (if the final design has multiple pages, such as a website / app, then more than one image is recommended; a collage may be created)

• at least one image showing their design ideas

• at least one image showing examples of refining their design. 

Candidates are not required to make the outcome, and should not include any material gathered during the creation of the digital technologies outcome for achievement standard 92004 or 92005. 

Candidates are encouraged to collate their mini portfolio as soon as the ‘design’ teaching and learning is completed. Candidates are expected to write no more than 1,000 words in this assessment. 

Candidates are recommended to spend no more than 3 hours of class time to individually collate their mini portfolio for submission under teacher supervision.

Conditions of assessment 

Candidates can complete work digitally and / or on paper, but submission is digital only. This should comprise a maximum of:

• 8–10 A4 single-sided pages saved as a PDF; or 

• 8–10 slides saved as a PDF; or

• 6 A3 single-sided pages saved as a PDF. 

All images should be included within this page limit and all text a readable plain black font no smaller than 11pt. The submission must be entirely self-contained – it must not include links to content outside of the submission (e.g. a link that takes the assessor to a YouTube video or a file in a Google Drive). 

Candidates are not permitted to use chatbots, generative AI, paraphrasing tools, or other tools to generate any written responses to describe or explain their design in the mini portfolio evidence. 

Authenticity 

Teachers must closely supervise the process of designing the digital outcome and evidence collation to ensure that candidates:

• do not copy their design from another person or source; and

• do not receive additional guidance, scaffolding, instruction or assistance, or assessment conditions beyond what is specified as permissible in these Assessment Specifications. 

Where a teacher cannot verify that the assessment submitted is the authentic work of the candidate, they must notify NZQA of a possible Candidate Breach of External Assessment. 

Submission requirements 

The portfolio may be word processed or in a slide show, however it must be saved in PDF format. Only ONE file per candidate may be uploaded for submission. 

Submission instructions will be made available at the start of Term 2. These will contain submission instructions for 92007, 91899 and 91909.
