Course Length: Approximately 16 weeks.
AS92007- Design a digital technologies outcome
AS92005 - Develop a digital technologies outcome
This course is designed to be done in conjugation with the Print & Digital Media Outcome. Students will come up with an idea, refine the idea through and create a justifiable proposal for what they plan to produce.
Software requirements:
Any Web Browser (eg Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari) for documentation
We will be working through the
You are going to work through your project to explore an area, come up with some ideas, define what you are going to make and the design and create your idea.
You will use one document to collate all your work as you go, make a copy of L1 DT Print & Digital Media Project document
Brainstorm all the possible ideas for a project.
At this stage it should be everything you might like to do and could be a number of different areas within DT.
Then under each of the areas what could you create? Who might be end users? Or go the other way.... what problem could you solve?
Think about:
Qualities / Skills / Talents I feel I have
People who are important to me
Things that impact / affect me
Things that I enjoy doing
Check out some of these if you are stuggling with what you could do with your ideas
StoryWorth - Book Creation
Best Awards - NZ
Red Dot Awards - International
Based on your brainstorm, what area will your project focus on?
Consider the potential impacts of any project. Who or what might be positively or negatively affected by it. Some impacts could be monetary, emotional, physical or spiritual, environmental.
For example:
You should make sure you are not stealing other people's ideas (intellectual property).
You should make sure you are allowed to use other people’s content like music or tutorials (copyright).
The content should be inoffensive and age appropriate (moral/ethical and legal).
The content should be viewable by ALL people on their device and not create any barriers to them viewing it. (accessibility).
How will you protect your own work? (intellectual property)
And lots more!

Context:
There is so much information that surronds us these days especially with how readily technology is available! Posters can still grab the attention of viewer depending on the information and how it is designed. They are designed to appeal to a target audience and use a variety of design elements to do so. At Catholic Cathedral College we have lots of classrooms that have littlle information about the subjects on the wall. This is your chance to create an infographic that displays information in an area of your favourite subject that can be displayed on walls and also in a version that can be used on the web. Make sure you think about the target audience and the materials/components you need to use, as this will affect the design, especially the size and layout.
Given Brief:
Design and produce an infographic that will be printed to be displayed on the classroom wall of your selected subject and a version that can be used on the web. The infographic should be created considering stakeholder opinion, the topic, design elements, size and materials/components and reflect elements of your personality.

“Celebration of Cultures”
Context:
New Zealand is a very multi cultural nation and within our schools we are blessed with students from a number of these cultures. It is the time to celebrate the different cultures we have at our school! This project is your opportunity to promote a culture that you are interested in.
Today designers are influenced by their personal likes. It is a chance to show their own style to the world. With so much information and advertising being shown to us 24/7 it is a real challenge to make people stop and take notice. Influences like colour play a huge part in catching the viewer’s attention; colour creates interest but at the same time is hard to get it right so that it is visually pleasing. Typography is another huge influence, which has changed the design world especially in the digital capacity. It’s not just about picking a font anymore and placing some text, it’s the manipulation of the type to also grab the viewer’s attention. Other design influences can include balance, contrast, form, shape, and tone. Your personality will also influence this project.
Given Brief:
Design, develop and produce through creativity and the use of design principles and elements a poster that reflects elements of your personality and the culture you have chosen. You need to capture people’s attention to make them stop and take notice, make sure you think about the location as this will affect the design and materials of your poster.
Design promotional materials such as flyers, posters, and digital banners for an upcoming event or community initiative.
Publication Design a magazine spread on a topic of interest, incorporating text, images, and graphics to create a visually appealing layout.
Context:
The cover of a book is how you grab the attention of viewers. The cover is designed to appeal to a target audience and uses a variety of design elements to do so. Every year Catholic Cathedral College produces a yearbook to celebrate and document the year. This is the your chance to create a cover that celebrates the spirit of the school from the eyes of the student. Make sure you think about the target audience, as this will affect the design.
Given Brief:
Design and produce a cover for the Catholic Cathedral College 2015 Yearbook. The cover should be created considering stakeholder opinion, the theme, design elements and reflect elements of your personality.
It is important to know and understand Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga. You will need to understand and implement these principles throughout your project.
"A sense of family connection"."
Whanaungatanga is all about relationships, working together, a sense of belonging.
"The process of showing respect and care; reciprocity between people, living things, and places."
Manaakitanga underpins a lot of what designers do when they talk to people, listen to people and design for their needs.
"Guardianship, stewardship for living things and resources."
This is a key concept in design and once you understand it we will develop ways that we can show it as we design. Watch the video and think about how we might show Kaitiakitanga in deciding what to design and how we design it.

Have a read through their Values; Ingredients, Packaging, Community & Chocolate Making. Can you see where Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga are evident?
Coca-Cola - Mixing English & Te Reo
Do you know what's wrong with Coca-Colas use of "Kia ora, Mate"?
Check out the following articles Coca-Cola's te reo marketing blunder to learn more.
How could this have been prevented?
Need some more help?
Watch the videos to get a better understanding of what manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga are.
Within these 3 principles you will need to understand what design factors you might need to consider within your project.
Design factors include: Social, Cultural, Legal, Copyright, Intellectual Property, Privacy, Ethical, End-user considerations, Accessibility, Usability, Functionality, Aesthetics, Health and Safety, Sustainability and Future Proofing.
Understand what these design factors involve and while doing your research have a think about where Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga have been shown and what design factors had to be considered.
When looking at a range of existing outcomes you might like to think about some of the following:
What is the aim or goal of the outcome?
Who are the End Users and where/how did they access the outcome?
What are the potential applications?
What are the current trends in Print & Digital Media?
What are the key components or features of Graphic Design or your specific area?
What are the common challenges faced?
What are the factors influencing the direction of Print & Digital Media?
What are the factors contributing to the success/failure of Print & Digital Media?
What are the future trends and developments in Print & Digital Media?
What are the potential challenges and opportunities in the future of Print & Digital Media?

Conventions are the way in which something is usually done. In each digi area there will be specific conventions you should follow.
You need to know and understand the conventions as these will help your outcome be successful.
Now you know and understand what Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga are as well as Design Factors.
Whilst you will consider and use these principles and design factors throughout your project there will be specific times that you are showing these.
You need to show & write about:
What design factors you need to consider for your project?
Where and how you think you will be using these principles?
From your design factors, some of them will be more relevant within a principle, where do you feel they will be most evident?
Now it's time to work out what sort of project you might undertake and what it entails
