3D modelling is the process of creating a three-dimensional representation of an object using specialised software.

3D models are used for a variety of mediums including video games, movies, architecture, illustration, engineering, and commercial advertising.

Laser cutting is a subtractive manufacturing process, meaning that it precisely cuts away material from the source to create the desired shape keeping it as bare-bones as possible. Laser cutting is taking material away while 3D printing is adding/creating material.

Create a Fusion 360 account

Fusion 360 is the first 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE tool of its kind that connects your entire product development process in a single cloud-based platform that works on PC, Mac, and mobile devices.

When creating an account you will need to enter your Name, Date of Birth, Select High School and enter Your School, start date at Y9 - just put Feb 1st 20xx and end date of Y13 - Dec 1 20xx.

Create your free account here. You must use your school email.

It may take a couple of days for your status to change to Educational. In the mean time using the 'Trial' will be fine. Don't forgot to check your email to verify you email address.

A quick You-Tube get the students on the same page so they are looking at the same screen as the tutor. These are settings that a professional CAD person would use to set defaults. (It makes life easier...)

Create a Cookie cutter or mold

using the 3D printer

You can either create a cookie cutter or a mold (think to freeze water in or melt chocolate).

Note the size - 4inches is about 10cm.

Your print should be no larger than 100 x 100 x 100mm

We will then test these using play dough or you can actually make cookies!

Using cardboard can be a very cheap and fast way to create prototypes to check details and sizes before you go ahead and create the your final outcome a more expensive material.

This tutorial shows you some tricks to help create the vectors needed for the laser cutter and how you can stack the material to create 3D objects.
